They are people, not sardines

Dear President Duterte,
I know you’re a very busy man but I hope you’ll have some time to read this.
Schindler’s List is one of my favorite movies. I hope you have seen it already. It tells the story of a man who saved hundreds of Jews during the Holocaust.
In 2008, I visited the Holocaust Museum in Houston. I entered this car by myself. It was used to transport Jews to the concentration camps where many of them were killed brutally.

Lots of Jews died during the transport.

The ones who survived were forced to stay under inhuman conditions with little food. They were cramped in bunk beds like sardines.

This was more than 70 years ago. Now in the Philippines, take a look at our prison conditions in Manila, photographed by Noel Celis/AFP.
They are worse than the concentration camps.

There are no beds.

No space.

Some of them sleep in the open air. What if it rains, like now?

They are human too.

Not sardines.

Some sleep on the stairwell.

Dear President Duterte,
Look what the past presidents have not done to help these people. Maybe you can be the change they are waiting for. Please have mercy.
Not everybody is guilty. Some of them have been waiting for years for their cases to be heard.
And if they’re guilty, they still don’t deserve this.
Please do something.

Please share until it reaches the President.
Thank you.

That is just awful and brutal condition for any human being. The condition that they are in is basically a crime against humanity considering that many of them are still waiting for their cases to be heard.

I know you supported him so I’m glad you are not like his other supporters who seem to have lost their humanity and ability to reason, and support him 100% even if some of his plans and actions are highly questionable, at best.

There was this Kentucky judge who was just in the news recently because she was outraged to discover a woman in her court who had spent three days in prison so far and was denied clothing and feminine products. The woman was actually wearing shorts but she wore a long T-shirt so it looked like she was only in her underwear. Nevertheless, the judge was really angry at the treatment of the prisoner and repeatedly apologized. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2016/08/01/am-i-in-the-twilight-zone-a-judges-reaction-to-a-bare-legged-defendant-in-court/ I agree with you, Ms. C., that past presidents haven’t really done anything to alleviate the conditions of our prisons while drug lords… Read more »

My heart breaks. How about the wealthy people? Can’t they contribute? How about Robin Padilla who has experienced this? Aren’t the wealthy allowed to make a change? I wish I had money. I wish I can make a change. Depends on the crime. If somebody murders my family, I wouldn’t give a flying **** even if they get boiled and/or flayed alive. But some of these people are in for minor crimes, and some are even innocent.
