Hurray for Friends & Comme des Garçons
Posted on

I was in Tokyo last November when Comme des Garçons released a capsule collection of special holiday products in its flagship store in Aoyama.

When I arrived in the afternoon, many of the items had already been sold out. Although the staff were smiling, they admitted to being stressed that day as customers fought for certain items.
Luckily, the items have arrived in Manila this December and I get to buy what I want 🙂

For Comme des Garçons’ Holiday 2018 campaign, Rei Kawakubo collaborated with nine designer labels:
Gucci
Burberry
Maison Martin Margiela
Jean Paul Gaultier
Simone Rocha
Craig Green
Walter van Beirendonck
Marine Serre
Stüssy

Kawakubo designed a special holiday piece, based on an iconic clothing item, accessory or design fragment each designer brand submitted.
According to Adrian Joffe, president of Comme des Garçons International and chief executive at Dover Street Market (DSM), “We have always enjoyed the synergies of CDG-style collaborations, which is not about brainstorming and back-and-forth with the other party but about trust and respect. Rei does not enjoy two captains on a ship. So we either leave it to them or ask that they leave it to her. The nine brands were very happy to leave it to her this time.”
