Bench’s new traffic hazzards
Posted on

I haven’t seen any of the new Bench billboards yet, but I’ve been hearing about near-accidents caused by ball players in undies.
Grace swears she almost hit another car when she spotted Aly Borromeo on Edsa Southbound, in between Guadalupe and Estrella Street/Rockwell (how detailed!).

Aly Borromeo is the Team Captain of the Philippine Azkals, the national football team.

Less known but increasingly popular are the Philippine national rugby team, also known as the Philippine Volcanoes, spotted on Edsa Guadalupe. (Hmmm…..let’s clean up the Pasig River kaya.)

Being a 36 year old mom has probably turned me into a prude but I just don’t find these shots appropriate for billboards especially when I have my kids in the car.  there are different venues for these shots.  i think Bench is great and am happy for their meteoric success but a little social responsibility would make them even better I think.  Just because you can doesn’t mean you should.  be intelligent and think of more creative ways to sell please.    [Reply]Bay_ot Reply:June 30th, 2011 at 5:08 AMAgree….. What’s the difference between their billboards with the other underwear billboards scattered around Metro Manila? And Ma’am with all due respect, these guys has been mentoring an orphanage for the longest time, every year they go back to the orphanage without any publicity just to teach the kids about the game of Rugby and also to mentor them. Bench endorsement comes as a much needed sponsorship since for the past four years these lads have been shouldering their own expenses just to represent the country. Most of the players live outside the country so every time they compete under our… Read more »

They love the country? Or just love the game but they can’t get into the team of the country where they presently live, so they played  under Philippine Flag because they know Phil could not afford to have a Rugby team?  I know they hardly speaks Tagalog or Bisaya (I am Bisaya) and they don’t live in the Phil, so is it possible to love a place where you barely know anything? Just a thought.   I love Bench, and I love the brand’s success in its very own country where colonial mentality is epidemic. And I wish, just like… Read more »

I don’t get why their love for the Philippines is being questioned. They love their Filipino mothers (or fathers, or grandparents) so they love the country where their loved ones are from — is that so hard to understand?  Implying that you have to live somewhere in order to love it means the hundreds of thousands of Filipinos raised abroad can’t possibly love the Philippines. I’m sure many of them would take issue with that assumption. Intl Rugby Board rules allow non-citizens to play for a country as long as they show 3 years of residency in that country. If… Read more »

Love to anything important, either a thing or person or country,  is not hard to understand. It doesn’t even take a scientist (as Jennifer Paige had put it).  Feeling it is hard, especially for a country that you barely know.  Loving someone (parents for example) doesn’t necessarily mean loving everything that someone has. I know some who love their husbands but call husbands’ mothers monsters-in-law. Well, I said too much  about loving.   Some high-class schools incorporated ‘immersion’ in their curriculum, in order for damn rich young studes to understand, relate, sympathize, or learn (or realize to strive hard in… Read more »

Just to say, As a current member of the Philippine National Team and as a home grown player; currently living in the Philippines and also for the past 9 years, alot of the players are new to the National Team yet it does not give you the right to tell them that they do not love a country they know nothing about when half of them is filipino. No one knew about boxing really until pacquiao stepped up. Nobody knew about soccer until the world cup and the azkals came about. You cannot criticize a sport just because it is… Read more »

They’re promoting underwear, what else should they be wearing?
I would have an issue with the billboard if they were promoting coffee and still in just their undies — that would be just plain gratuitous.
