Eiga Sai: Japanese film festival at the Shang

Shangri-La Plaza hosts the highly-anticipated Eiga Sai (Japanese Film Festival) this July 2-10, 2011 at Shang Cineplex Cinema 4.
Presented in partnership with the Japan Foundation and the Embassy of Japan, the festival, now on its 13th year, opens with an invitational screening of Departures (Okuribito) on July 1st, 7 PM at the Grand Atrium.
The screening is accompanied by a special performance by Renato Lucas, principal cellist of the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra, together with the group’s acclaimed pianist Naomi Sison.

Departures, winner of the 81st Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2009, takes on a bizarre and unique subject with an intelligent script and outstanding acting performance by Masahiro Motoki, who plays Daigo Kobayashi, an aspiring cellist-turned-encoffinner.
Motoki won Best Actor in the 32nd Japan Academy Prize in 2008 and Kinema Junpo Awards in 2009 for his role, complementing the brilliance of acclaimed director Yojiro Takita.

Other exciting films include One Million Yen Girl (Hyakumanen to Nigamushi Onna), a coming-of-age story that stars Japanese contemporary cinema’s rising star Yu Aoi, as a girl who vows to leave her bitter life once she saves up a million yen.

in The Chef of South Polar (Nanyoku ryorinin), the chef of a research group in the South Pole goes through great lengths to keep the table filled with delectable meals.

Animated film Summer Days with Coo (Kappa no Coo to natsu-yasumi) revolves around a human and an amphibious creature called Kappa, and the friendship that ensues between them.

Your Friend (Kimino Tomodachi) is the touching story between Emi and Yuki, who are both bullied in school but eventually help each other overcome their personal hindrances, and in turn, try to heal their classmates as well.

Arnica was recommended by my doctor/pole-dancing friend, Pia:
“Cecile, Can I tell you about arnica? Most of the girls in my pole (dance) and aerial studio rub it on their bruises and it makes it go away. I’ve always had a tube dahil sa peer pressure but I was always too lazy to use it. I talked to a plastic surgeon at work recently, and lately he’s been telling his patients use it post-op on their faces after nose jobs and the like and he said ang ganda ng results. Eh recently I burned my hand big time. It’s been slow healing for 2 weeks, so I put arnica on it just for fun. OMG, it looked so much better in just 2 days! Tama sila. I was thinking baka it might help you heal. I don’t know lang nga where you can get it in Pinas. I got a tube of the gel in Whole Foods for $8. I was just thinking it might help you heal faster.”

Stuck at home, I’ve been watching a lot of Cinema One and ANC.
Yesterday I was getting a hot compress when my assistant and I saw this…
I’m the type of person who, if you watch a movie or TV with me, I’ll be yakking my comments during.
So I was telling my assistant, “ang chica naman ng glasses ng mamang yan” (referring to the white-haired man in the interview).
Then this Rafa Santos came onscreen and personally, I found him so smug and mayabang. I told my assistant, “ang guapo pa naman.”
Strangely enough, he says something very shocking—even to me.

When Cityscape host Lexi Schulze asked why the Samarito director preferred to employ stage actors in his films, a straight-faced Santos answered: “Because they don’t complain. You can feed them Skyflakes three meals a day or pay them in cat food. They’re never late and they cry when you want them to cry.” Source

I’m so grateful there was no social media when I was 21 and feeling the power, having my own column in the Daily Globe, where I could write anything I wanted, because I certainly wrote a lot of careless things.
I can’t tell you how grateful I am that Internet came along in my 30s. Otherwise, I would’ve been a serious social media casualty.
