Just say NO to fake ink

Last January 2010, HP convinced me to trade in my beloved Epson printer for an HP Photosmart Premium.
While I was very hesitant to give up my trusted printer, the idea of having a wireless one appealed to me.
So I gave in, accepted this, and fell in love.

HP Photosmart Premium

It printed beautifully without much problems. But by May 2011, I had already spent 25,000 on HP ink alone. I wish I could trade the empty cartridges for something, like they do at MAC cosmetics, where you can trade in six empty foundation compacts for a free lipstick (but only in richer countries like Hong Kong and Singapore).
Since HP doesn’t have a program like that, I actually took my empties to the HP office in Singapore for recycling.

Php 25,000 worth of used ink

I tried to find other ways to save on ink costs and found an offer on Amazon.com. Unfortunately I misread the description and failed to read the word “compatible.” I thought I was buying Hewlett Packard ink. I was really surprised to receive a ton of fake ink, which worked in the beginning but ultimately destroyed my printer heads.

Fake ink ruined my printer heads

It was so bad, I ended up throwing out even genuine HP ink that refused to work because the printer heads were clogged.
My printer is currently being repaired. Luckily, HP gifted me with an improved version of their wireless printer. Not only does it print photo-quality pictures and documents, it also scans and photocopies whatever you need at home.

The good news is, it comes with four ink cartridges (instead of five), with a more affordable price tag (black ink is Php 390 and cyan/magenta/yellow are Php 260 each, instead of the Php 500++ I used to pay for the other model).

Cheaper ink!

The printer itself costs only Php 7,900. I just installed it today—no need to read instructions as I’m quite used to the HP setup.

New printer!

As for the other printer I refuse to give up, that’s going to my new apartment which should be occupiable in a couple of months (I hope!).

    Hi Rae,
the Ink Advantage 5525 has just been been recently launched here. You can look for HP resellers that are near your area in the HP Philippines website so you can call the them to inquire for it.

    Hi Ms.Cecille,

Dito sa US they recycle hp ink then you can get rewards for the cost of the ink like sa staples or  sa office depot. sayang walang program dyan na katulad dito. if malapit ka lang i can get all your used ink :) love your blog and pepper lunch nung umuwi ako dyan last year. :)

I live in the Quezon City area and so I called computer stores located at SM North and Trinoma. None of them had this model. In case you recall the store where you saw this specific printer model,  then kindly let me know.  I still wonder why the HP guy I spoke with said that the model is not available in the Phils.  Perhaps he wasn’t present during the launch????  :)

Thank you for your post, Ms. Cecile. Both I and my husband have tight deadlines when our printer conked out the other day. We planned to leave early yest to buy. Buti na lang I visited your blog just before we left, ang saya! The first store na pinuntahan namin, wala. So sa 2nd store since no time na, we settled for a different model, HP Deskjet Ink Adv din pero 3525. Don’t know the diff pero this is a thou bucks cheaper so there must be some. But the features u mentioned, pasok. ALiw na aliw kami sa wireless printing! Panay email namin, print sya agad hehe… Phinoto copy din bigla kung ano-ano, hehe… Fengks again :)

I bought one last year to print my Save the Dates. This printer is absolutely amazing! (and yes, super cheap pa the cartridges)

(It’s a wireless HP printer with scanner too, but not sure if it’s the same model as the one in the entry)

I’ve had my HP printer for 6 years now and it still works like new! I’ve only used HP inks of course.

since u print a lot of color, you may want to try the Epson L series printers. It uses geniune continuous ink system.

How did you recycle your empty cartridges, Miss C? I have a lot and parang such a waste if tatapon ko lang sila. Wala po bang ‘recycle program’ ang HP or yung parang they buy them back at some tens of pesos?
