Dolphy memories, Part 1: the movies

My earliest memory of Dolphy was watching his black and white movies as a child. I remember seeing Ibong Adarna at my Tita Noly’s house in San Juan with my playmate Lia.
I remember Dolphy as Prinsipe Abante squeezing calamansi onto a self-inflicted wound to keep awake, as falling asleep would turn him into a statue of salt (or something). I loved it so much, I’m so glad I was able to buy a rare DVD, which I still have somewhere in this house.

For me, one of the best Dolphy movies is Dobol Trobol, where he played a Siamese twin of his real-life brother, Georgie Quizon. They marry the Wing Duo (a.k.a. Nikki Ross and Angela Yoingco).
I was a child then but I still remember the awkwardness of their wedding night.

I just recently rediscovered Beatnik, which someone has uploaded on YouTube. I wish somebody had thought of properly archiving our Tagalog movies from years back as they are really precious.
I love the fashion and dancing in this hilarious movie.

Wish I could see John en Marsha sa Amerika, where John wins a trip to US via a game show. Saw this during my formative years.

Also memorable to me is Ang Nanay Kong Tatay, where Doplhy plays a beauty parlor gay who ends up taking care of an orphan (Niño Muhlach). Wish they would have a Dolphy movie marathon for a week on TV, for Dolphy was truly a gem. There will be nobody like him again in Philippine cinema.

My favorite DOLPHY movie was Ang tatay kong Nanay and Facifica Falayfay, Fifita Fofonggay, which i both saw on TV back then….and i would never miss an episode of John and Marsha….I think at a very young age, i was allowed to see John en Marsha sa Amerika. Yes, Iba ang humor noon, lalo na how DOLPHY does it. Only the Comedy King can.

Cecille, never have I been so thankful that I’m a loyal subscriber of your blog than today. In the past, you have helped me present a very interesting lesson about nuts. Now, our Gr. 7 students badly, very badly, need to watch Ibong Adarna to help them understand what the story is about. It is my job to make it happen (as in literally my job to acquire AV materials for the school). Unfortunately, I cannot find a copy of this DVD anymore. I have resorted to scouting for plays that stage IA. Then I chanced upon this entry. Would you be so kind as to lend us your copy for a day or two (a week would be less stressful but I’ll take what I can get) just to let our students watch it this coming September? Or point me to the right direction on where to buy one? Many, many thanks in advance. I know of your good heart that’s why I mustered enough courage to ask you.

Personally, I like ‘Ang Tatay kong Nanay’ the best. It really showcased not only Dolphy but the adorable Nino Muhlach at their best, even the supporting cast were good. Lino Brocka was truly a gem.

You should check out Video 48′s store located in West Ave., QC. The number of available old movie titles there are mind-boggling. It’s owner Sir Simon is such a cool guy.

I’m a huge fan of Home Along Da Riles too! Hanggang ngayon, memorize ko pa yung lyrics nung intro.
Wanted: Perfect Father is my favorite movie of Dolphy’s. So sad that we will never see another one like him. He’s truly one of a kind.

My fave Dolphy movie is “Ibong Adarna” as well. I remember watching it on RPN9 as part of their afternoon movie showings. It was my habit to watch the channel after coming home from school then. The set design was elaborate and you could appreciate it even if the film was in between black/white and colored.

I do wish they would air re-runs of John en Marsha, too.

My earliest memories was watching John en Marsha on TV. The only Dolphy movie I can recall is Markova. I must have watched the other movies, but I just couldn’t recall the names. :/

I love “King and Queen For A Day”. I loved the scene where Dolphy accidentally interchanged the sound negatives of a love story and cowboy and indian movie. LOL

GMA NewsTV 11 featured Dolphy films for its Sinema Klasika show (every 1pm) which included Lucio & Miguel, Beatnik, etc.
They’re extending their Pidol special for another week in memory of the late comedian.

Next weeks’s films will be as follows:
Monday - Jack & Jill (Starring Dolphy, Lolita Rodriguez)
Tuesday - Despatsadora (Starring Dolphy, Glora Romero)
Wednesday – Hani-Hanimun (Starring Dolphy, Juancho Gutierrez)
Thursday – Vacasionista (Starring Dolphy, Luis Gonzales)
Friday - Mga Kwento ni Lola Basyang (Starring Dolphy, Gloria Romero)

It’s nice that they’re showing classic films on tv again. I hope they can digitise/remaster the sounds to make it more enjoyable.

I was able to watch ”HongKong Holiday” many times on channel 9 as a child. He starred with Gloria Romero, Paraluman and Daisy Romualdez, I think. I can’t remember though who the leading mal actor was but the villain I think was Eddie Garcia. Glad I could post this because I could not discuss this with anyone at work – kasi hindi sila maka-relate!

i don’t remember much of the movie you mentioned with the exception of “ang tatay kong nanay”. if my memory serves me well, there’s a heavy drama/crying on this movie. the chemistry between mang dolphy and nino muhlach was superb. like la pintasera, i too am a batang 80′s. those black and white films were a true filipino classic movies. i think there should be a channel there in pinas dedicated to these movies.

Love to see again names like Nori, Mitos, Meldy… they remind me so much of my parents and my titas/titos generation.
I also miss 80s names like Noemi, Chat/Chit, Chona, Maita, Chito, Monching… remind me so much of my older cousins, hehe.
These days kids are all named Nicole, Ashley, etc…

I’m really sad and ashamed to say, as a lover of Pinoy cinema I haven’t really had the chance to watch Dolphy movies. That being said, naturally, now I shall make up for lost time and watch as many movies of his as I can. I’ve seen bits and pieces, and seen him mostly on TV but his movies I never really had the time or inclination to enjoy.

Ms. C, I’m so envious that you have a DVD copy of Ibong Adarna. I’ve been looking for DVDs of Sampaguita and LVN films for a long long time now and one store I found requires 4 weeks and an exorbitant amount. Sigh.

Like you and many others, I also count Ibong Adarna as one of my favorite Dolphy movies, but that’s second to Jack en Jill, which I never tired of watching whenever it was on replay. I also loved Dolphy even in bit roles in Hong Kong Holiday and Dalagang Ilocana, with Gloria Romero. I’m really a fan of those 2, plus Nida Blanca.

I hope he’s having a happy reunion with his Marsha in heaven now.

Salamat talaga, Mang Dolphy. Masaya ang childhood ko partly because of you.

All time favorite movie of Dolphy is Kalabog and Bosyo (1959 version). Its from one of Larry Alcala’s comic strips Watched when I was still very young..I wish I can find a DVD of it

As a “batang 80s” i grew up watching classic movies after Eat Bulaga (RPN 9) so I remember bits of Ibong Adarna. My favorite Dolphy classic was Pacifica Palaypay. And who didn’t watch John En Marsha back in the days? /sigh

Thank you Mang Dolphy for the gift of laughter. You will truly be missed.

P.S. Can’t help but love our classic posters. I wish they can be reprinted as posters.
