What’s your mix?

Each one of us comes from a different lineage. My maternal grandmother—believe it or not—was blonde and blue-eyed, of German-American-Spanish descent. She’s the one on the right.

I love those leaf tables

She loved to travel with my paternal grandmother (dark hair and eyes) on the left.

My Lola is dressed like Mary Kate

This is me. Obviously I look more like my Filipino lola.

In their latest ad campaign, Bayo celebrates everyone’s uniqueness, whatever your mix is.
Just like their collection, Bayo and encourages you to mix and match their pieces and create a style that is you.

What I find completely idiotic is that the models are just Filipino. They either have no or little mix of another ethnicity. (I know this because my sister is a model and knows the models on the ad. She told me about it and laughed that they used 100% Filipino women, making their point of the ad useless)

This is an example of colonial mentality that Filipino only when mixed is good. Filipino alone is nothing special.

Although Bayo’s idea is great to mix and match. Mixing and Matching Filipino.? So the point is, only if you’re mixed are you anything special.? Dude. Wow.

Advocacy gone wrong! The Glutamax ad implies that whiter and clearer skin means “kutis mayaman” and nobody complains. They even chose that crappy endorser (Gretchen Baretto) which made it more offensive to our taste.  And here is a BAYO ad that celebrates our diversity and some people complain. What’s happening in this country?

Bayo’s “What Your Mix?” is an attractive ad for me. Read the message, use your common sense; it never emphasized in anyway that being pure Filipino is ugly or anything inferior. Optimism people!

We have Spanish surnames, not necessarily Spanish ancestors. Most Pinoys are Malays. Those of Spanish descent are a minority.

Honestly, people seem to see this as racist, and I don’t understand why. Many pinoys have become overly race-sensitive these days. That in itself IS RACIST in my opinion.

Not sure of the percentage, but I do know that there’s Spanish + Chinese blood from Mom’s side of the family and Filipino + Chinese from Dad’s side. One of my older sisters look European, two siblings are morena/moreno, and the rest (3) of us are singkit. :)

My mom’s Spanish, third generation born and raised in the Philippines, but originally from Santander (although they say one of my lolo’s grandmothers was Italian.) My dad’s Ilonggo with Chinese and Spanish blood too. Ako, I took after my dad. My sister got all the Spanish genes, hehehe.

I remember a college professor telling us in class that in all likelihood, most Filipinos have Chinese and Spanish blood. All those frailes’, insulares’ and sangleys’ marriages with the natives are responsible for that.

I am deeply fascinated with genealogy and one of my frustrations is having almost no knowledge of my ancestors on both sides of the family. Right now, I’m addicted to watching this TV series called “Who Do You Think You Are?” which was originally from the UK and then adapted by the US, Australia, Ireland, etc. It deals about genealogy and they feature celebrities like Brooke Shields (descended from French royalty and Italian nobility), Martin Sheen (activist/rebellious ancestors on both sides, hence), Lisa Kudrow, JK Rowling, etc., and these people travel and try to retrace where their ancestors come from, often with surprising results.

Very intriguing and insightful. I wish we had such a show in the Philippines but baka kung ano ang mabuking! :P

Mixed here, too.  My maternal granda is half German-American, quarter Filipino, and quarter Spaniard.  But my paternal grandpa’s and my dad’s Filipino genes are strong, so I look completely Pinoy. :)

Curious lang.. how exactly does one become 40/60 or 30/70?  Parang ang hirap i-compute without going through multiple generations and mixes.  lol.

Because I am a math geek, I can answer this. Pwede naman ang 70/30 and 60/40, but they just had to round to the nearest %.

    70/30 = 68.75/31.25 = 11 great great grandparents of once race, 5 of another
    60/40 = 62.5/37.5 = 5 great grand parents of one race, 3 of another

But of course, the computation will get complicated if the ancestors themselves are of mixed ancestry.

Biologically, you’d need to see which inherited genes were expressed and which weren’t. Just cause your dad’s Spanish doesn’t mean your genes would express Spanish 50% traits. Besides, there is really not such thing as a gene that makes you Spanish, Filipino, etc.
Pero I think pampasaya lang ang mga numbers :) . I have Chinese, Polynesian somewhere in my blood but I prefer to say I’m 50% Waray and 50% Igorot!
