Welcome to Schiphol

Let’s make this like a YES! magazine entry.
Schiphol (pronounced Skip-pol) is the name of the airport in Amsterdam (end of YES! mag reference).
We arrived here at 6 AM, Dutch time. Felt the cold air immediately upon stepping out to the boarding bridge.
The boys were thrilled.

I really love these small trolleys that make lugging carry-ons easier. Wish we had these in NAIA.
That’s my stuff.

Immigration was a breeze. No immigration forms, can you imagine? The boys all have Dutch passports, while Yaya Bhing and I queued together. I was scared of interrogation, but the good-looking officer simply said, “Good morning” and “What is your purpose of travel?” Two stamps later, and we’re off.

Schiphol is really lovely. I prefer it to Singapore, Hong Kong, Bangkok and Narita airports.
There’s an air of instant chic I don’t see in Asian airports.

I really love Dutch design. Check out the Starbucks

Because we were knocked out during the 12-hour flight, the boys wanted McDonald’s, which is a sight for rumbling tummies in any airport. NAIA needs this.

Fries, chicken nuggets, and sosy water for the boys. Coffee for Yaya.

and excited to have McKroket (a special Dutch treat—box says “world famous in Holland”)

Oh, and I love these breaded prawns—only in Holland!! I love!!!

Eating at McDonald’s is non-negotiable when I visit a country. I think it’s a way of getting to know the culture since so many locals eat it everyday. Most bizarre so far would be the breakfast noodle soup thing in HK.

And sometimes, I wonder, what do foreigners feel when they enter a McDonald’s here in Manila.

PS. Are those McCrackers in the pic with the Spa water?

Agree. The most bizarre McDonald’s I’ve been in was a Tex-Mex themed one. Complete with cacti, ponchos and cowboy hats. In Munich.

My Swiss friend told me they serve fondue in McDonalds in Switzerland. Sabi ko they should call it McDue. #pinoyhumor

Hardcore si Yaya Bhing, naka t-shirt lang! The boys’ matching backpacks (with the NL flag/baggage tags) are so cute. De Bijenkorf (parang Rustan’s) also has cute chocolates with Dutch-themed packaging for pasalubong.

For some reason the immigration officers are always cute. Maybe they really choose the cute ones, parang front-of-house staff lol. I had to stay overnight once due to a flight delay and the immigration guy asked me how long I was staying. When I said overnight, he said “Why just one night? Stay longer!” Chumika pa si kuya.

The best airport test is … if you can enjoy the airport despite a very long lay over. And it’s true about Schipol … it’s comfortable, interesting, easy to navigate, great signage … my longest layover there was five hours and it breezed by. They have a superb book and magazine store. I love the jelly bean art installation.

The signage in NAIA really hurts the eye. They look crude, temporary and too many fonts.

I just missed you by a week … will be in Schipol in 6 days … enroute to Berlin I’m following this Europe series avidly because am excited for your Yaya Bheng

I never really got to explore Schipol because the connection times between the inbound Manila flight and the outbound to wherever it is I’m going is so quick and vice versa. So my favorite part about Schipol is so babaw… The way they call out passengers who are late by name and then threaten to offload their baggage. I don’t remember the exact wording, but it went something like “Mr XXX, you are delaying your flight. Please proceed to gate XYZ now or we shall offload your luggage. Thank you.”

That was always my fear when in Schipol, for them to call out my name in that announcement. LOL.

Nakakatense talaga! That happened to me once, they said my name! I almost missed my connection from Amsterdam to Manchester. Tapos and sama ng tingin sa akin nung ground stewardess in the boarding gate! I can also hear the female voice in the walkalator saying “please watch your step, mind the gap” something like that hehehehe

Diba? I can hear in my head pa the tone of how the female recording says it (suki sa Schipol kasi). So calm and soothing. Haha. And may “thank you” pa sa dulo. I would hate to be that person and then have all the ground staff, crew and passengers glare at me when enter the plane. Kakahiya.
