i-Cringe: Taylor Kitsch tells NAIA experience to Letterman

JOHN CARTER

Taylor Kitsch’s short hair a problem, even for airport security
by Mandi Bierly

John Carter star Taylor Kitsch stopped by the Late Show With David Letterman last night and entertained Dave with a story about getting stopped by customs at an airport in the Philippines when his passport had no room left for a stamp.
He was informed he was going to be sent back on the next plane to Japan, where he just flew in from, but Kitsch, who had a work visa to film the upcoming Oliver Stone film Savages, told the agent he was an actor — which the man didn’t believe.
With the airport’s computers down, and the man not familiar with X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Kitsch pulled out his iPhone and played him the John Carter trailer.
“He’s like, ‘That’s not you.’ I’m like, ‘What?’ He’s like, ‘You have short hair.’ And I’m like, ‘Mate, I cut it. It grows. It’s me,’” Kitsch says.
Luckily, the guy liked the trailer and Kitsch got to stay.

Hi Ms CHuvaness..on a somehow different note..i have something to ask. My friend recently came home to the Philippines and on the way home she had a layover at Hongkong Intl Airport. While at DutyFree there, she bought this Gucci bag thinking its cheaper than most stores from the country where she came from. To her horror, upon arriving at NAIA one of the people at customs (from Customs Declaration) told her that she’s to pay a tax even if it was bought from DutyFree. Since the bag was 10,000 HKD she was asked to pay 13, 500 php as he said its calculated at 27% tax in PI. Please enlighten me with this. Thank you.

It happened in Indonesia, not in the Philippines. The actor should correct his mistake.

Uhmmm.. I don’t know but I kinda have this feeling that the the mistake was intended… Alam ata nila na magrereact ang mga Pinoys sa mga ganito… Hmmmmm…

    So sorry,
that sometimes we could encounter ignorant people however …..

    In fairness
to the Immigration Officer, no one could memorize all the actors’ faces/names.
    He did a quite good job being doubtful, except for the iPhone thing, #crap#?;
pls. it’s just an iPhone made in China. I just wish our IOs will stop asking
for anything, even for joke’s sake. DOTC-Mar Roxas please make this a rule for Immigration Officers – ‘Don’t
    ask for a favour’.
In addition, The Philippines is also in current
with the International Anti-terrorism issues, where some foreigners are using
the country as their gateway to the Western world. Not to mention, USA Immigration
Officers are worse compared to our Immigration Officers when it comes to boundaries.

Yikes, they shot in Indonesia, not the Philippines. He didn’t even passed thru our customs. And if the film were to be shot here, the traffic jam would have been 10 times more than what Bourne Legacy created.

Savages was filmed in Indonesia. Not the Philippines.

Think everything twice first people. If the great Oliver Stone indeed was filming Savages, with an ensemble cast, in the Philippines, it should have made bigger news than The Bourne Legacy. This is Oliver Stone we’re talking about!

I heard Savages is being filmed in Indonesia, where there is an equally problematic corruption situation. Maybe Letterman confused our country with Indonesia and Taylor had no opportunity to correct him. But then again of course, this does not avert the fact that Philippine Customs has a very bad track record when it comes to transparency and good governance (read: KURAKOT!).

Haha, yeah, I was working in Queens Hospital when they filmed that shot in the beginning right after the scene when he introduces his cousins bickering in the board room while he’s thinking of his wife, tapos they cut to him entering the hospital and climbing the stairs. I was supposed to be walking out the door right after he walks in it. I was close enough to touch him. But somehow people are more impressed by the time na katabi ko ang kotse ni Snooki sa highway… haha!

i used to work for an airline. immig guys love it when passengers arrive from our flights coz passengers are mostly from US and a few from japan. they “earn” a lot from our flights. there were times they would treat us in “bars” along roxas blvd… sort of thank you.
when the bill comes, mahina P12-15k bill. and this was in early 2000.

this makes me ashamed to be a PINOY–questions like ‘is this you?’ why is your hair different? !! (like one editor once asked some US brand’s representatives ‘what makes you think cargo pants are going to be a big thing?”–duh– it was exploding underneath her butt!)  The guy has a visa and whether he is a star or not, let him in. At least the film company did things the right way instead of asking Seiko Films to make it lakad!!! The more third world the country, the stricter the immigration procedures. as if anyone really wants to be in Manila…weekend flights out of Manila to HK and SG are FULL of foreign businessmen bec everyone WANTS OUT! That guy was such a sport and a true pro. (I also dont know who he is…) You should read the ex-MRS Francis Ford Coppola’s acct of THEIR days in the Phils…literally, that’s yet another horror story…

Some rotten tomatoes are not in groceries… they are also seen in the counters of immigration. Isn’t it disheartening to see this after all the things we Pinoys do promoting our place?! Sometimes we just feel so hopeless, and this really doesn’t help….

First of all, is that really a valid reason to detain someone at immigration? Because there’s no space on their passports to stamp? I’m really asking, because it seems like a stupid reason to send someone all the way back to where they came from because there’s no space on their passport. And hello, I’ve seen how immigration people (not just here) stamp, they even overlap on other stamps or stamp on the visa itself. They couldn’t do that?

And then. The guy asks for a friggin’ iPhone. Anak ng pating namaaaaaaaaaan. Nakakahiya! For all the talk about renovating NAIA 1 (what’s the update on that anyway?), what about training the people not be opportunistic lowlifes? The airport sucks na nga and then the people are unprofessional and corrupt! Haaaaaaaaaay! Nakakagalit!

Immigration officials at the airport, not only NAIA (even here in Cebu) likes to game called “Power Trip”. I’ve experienced it multiple times already and I have traveled in and out of the Philippines several times. Pinoy immigration officers have given me more problems than immigration officers of the countries I’ve traveled to.

Fine, it was filmed in Bali. It still doesn’t change the fact that there are quite a number of corrupt Philippine customs, immigration and POEA (or whatever government agency screens the OFWs before they leave the country) officials. It still doesn’t change the fact that an official was trying to wheedle money out of my outbound friend who works in SG, insisting that her documents were fake when they weren’t. It still doesn’t change the fact that customs assessments on packages rarely ever make sense, that they sometimes charge duties 2 or 3 times the value of the sent item, or the fact that foreigners in particular are pestered for tips and handouts.

Yes, this opportunistic low life was not in from Manila. It still doesn’t change the fact that there are A LOT of those in NAIA anyway.

So after all this unnecessary hassle the customs guy DID find a space in his passport to stamp. I bet there are a lot more of these incidents that we do not hear about. Mabuhay tourists!
