I’ve lost my mojo

You may have felt that I have lost my mojo to blog.
I started blogging 12 years ago in 2000, when I was stuck at home, pregnant with my first child.
By 2004, the blog became popular and took off. People became interested in buying ads and putting out press releases, and I was excited to accept them.
By 2012 I was earning more than a Cathay Pacific Second Officer. But all the work kind of ate up my soul.
I found myself writing about things I’m not particularly into, though I tried very much to write about things that mattered to me.
One of the things I’ve been fighting for—the renovation of NAIA—has yet to happen, even though the President has promised it would happen last year.

Lately I’ve been thinking of Market Manila and how he has consistently refused monetizing his blog.
A few years back he surprised us when he announced he would stop blogging, but got back to it after a few days.
As of now I have no desire to open my laptop. Not interested in emails.
I prefer watching mindless downloads and Apple TV, reading books, or fixing the house.
I’ve also been fixing my studio with the help of Kellyn See and Rex Gapuz, which should be done by February as I wait for my customized wallpaper from the UK.
This is a work in progress. I wonder if I could blog better here.

Work in progress

My friend Victor in Paris said I have out-Starcked myself. I think I can out-Starck Philippe Starck. I can work for yoo!!
I am kidding.
But years of staying in nice hotels have taught me a thing or two about what makes a nice room design. Thanks to my Philippine Star editor Millet Mananquil, whose assignments have changed the way I see hotel rooms, and architect Ed Calma, who changed the way I view bathrooms.

But I digress. This 2013 I have made a few goals for myself:
1) to get down to my ideal weight. This obsession with weight loss has made me sick since November 15th by the way.

Untitled

2) To choose my blog sponsors and write more about things that matter to me.
3) To go back to God and the church.
4) Renovate our house.

A brief CV:
My first job was at the Philippine Daily Globe around 1989-1991.
I left the job to study fashion at Parsons, New York from 1991-1995.
I worked as a fashion designer and shop owner in Manila from 1995-2000.
Met Jeroen in 1997, married in 2000, became a mom in 2001 and quit retail to become a stay-at-home mom. I also started blogging.
In 2004 after my second baby, I applied for a job at the Philippine Star, which opened many doors. My blog took off after this.
In 2008, Pepper Lunch opened, which changed my life forever.

Now that 2013 is just around the corner, I feel tired and menopausal. I feel the need to step back and think about what’s important to me.
I feel the need for less attention. I want to simplify, take a look inside, and think about what’s next for me.
I do believe in constant evolution. I am not sushi chef Jiro Ono who can do the same thing day after day, year after year.

Sukiyabashi Jiro

And with that I would like to take a short blog break until I get my mojo back and choose carefully my sponsors for 2013.
I do thank you for your readership. I read every single comment and take note of both positive and negative feedback. I may not act upon them instantly but I take many of them to heart.
Here’s wishing all of us a healthy and happy new year, with God’s blessings.
Meanwhile, I’ll see you on Twitter and Instagram @chuvaness

I must admit I’ve stumbled upon your blog just recently when I started my own blog, tongueincheekmomma.net.
I was doing some research on Philippine/filipino centric blogs and came upon a list where your blog was part of the top 10. Reading your blog has been part of my routine since.
Interesting to note that we share a few things in common:we both wrote for the Philippine Daily Globe (my stint was a brief one, writing articles for the advertising and lifestyle section) and we both went for further studies in NY, (me at French Culinary Institute).
Good luck on your hiatus. I hope you get your mojo back soon.

    Dear Ms Cecile,

The main reason why I don’t watch teleseryes, telenovelas and the like, is because I get hooked easily and I don’t want it to end, but it does anyway, which depresses me so much.  The first time I read your blog, I instantly liked it!  I even follow you on Twitter and IG because you’re someone who’s not afraid to speak your mind.  In fact, for 2013, I am planning to start my own blog (focused on traveling) because I was inspired with what you’re doing.

Nice to let you know that your blog is treasured by a lot of people, and I hope that would be one reason for you to find your way back to blogging, writing or expressing your thoughts in a really funny (sometimes, snobbish) way!   :) )

    Have a blessed new year!

I look forward to your blog everyday and still one my greatest guilty pleasures.  If not for you, I wouldn’t know what’s in and what’s out,  because I’m cooped up in our office everyday with not much of a social life, so you have been a window for me on what’s hot and trendy out there, though to be honest, some of the things you blogged about was not as good as it actually was and got a lot of ribbing from my husband.  Still, it was a great joy to try new things, visit exciting places, try restaurants that you recommend (still egging my husband to take me to Hyatt’s Fireplace) per your blog.  But most of all, my biggest pleasure is reading about your beautiful family, and surprise, surprise, your kids even write Chinese … beautifully! Thanks, CVS for all of this and much much more!

Oh, I did notice that you’ve blogged less and less and the way you write is slightly different than before when I first started reading. It felt as if you’d lost some of that spark you have when you write. That didn’t stop me from reading though. I may not leave many comments but I continously read your blog. I feel saddened to hear this but I do hope you get your mojo back. Maybe you’re right, a change of environment might help. Discover new things perhaps or pursue what you have always thought you would do but never started and then blog about it. Like other people here, this is the only blog I come back to. I’ve read so many but this is the only one that I’ve kinda stuck to ’cause it makes sense in a lot of nonsense. If you choose to stop blogging altogether, I’ll be sad but it’s okay. You do your thing as long as it makes you happy. You’ve done so many things for others. Maybe it’s also time to focus on yourself. Either way, we will all be here if you do choose to come back. Happy New Year to you Miss C. :)

This is sad. But I’m looking forward to your return.

I can’t forget how you boosted my own blog traffic with that Adrien-Brody-in-Manila entry. :D But that’s not really why I love your blog. I feel like you’ve instilled in me better taste (hahah); made me appreciate Japanese fashion, introduced me to Philippe Starck and showed me what good interior design really is.

I know what you mean, I think. I’ve also been blogging less but I blame it on Twitter, which is just more convenient for instant updates. I may not agree with some of your views but I do hope that you can come back soon. I have no doubt that your entries will be as awesome as ever.

    Happy New Year!

O my, I shall be missing your blogs! I learned a lot from you, from bathrooms to airports. And I’ve been to some really nice hotels and busy international airports. I came home for vacation, excited for NAIA 3, noticed the long lines at the check in counters and those at the  restrooms. At the back of my mind, I wondered what would Chuvaness say. Anyway, I have so much to be grateful for and I am just very happy to be with my loved ones after a long while. Here’s hoping that the Lord continue to protect and bless you and your family esp. with good health. And for the meantime, I will just browse your instagram……..Have a very blessed year of 2013 ;-)

Oh my, nasesenti ako. Around 2005 or 2006 ata when I started reading your blog. I dont remember na how I came across your Livejournal but I’m thankful that I have. I agree with most of the comments here – you have taught us style. Where to eat, what to watch, what to buy (I can super relate sa what to buy – from Clippa, to e-mooks at Kinokuniya, to Bleach Catastrophe, etc. grabe lang ang consumerism ko haha. I still regret not saying yes when you asked your readers before kung sino gusto magpabili ng Karl Who bag ugh).

Pati your kids, parang we know them na. When you post pictures of them now I really cant help but say wow ang laki na nila. Feeling close lang.:p

But yeah, I noticed too that when you moved to this site, things have changed a bit. Medyo restrained na nga, less chismax (hehe) and more ads. Nevertheless, still informative but I do miss your spunk during your Livejournal days.

Happy new year to you and your family, Im sure 2013 will be awesome. Cant wait for your mojo to be back, we’re excited to read your new posts.:)

I was actually one of your Daily Globe readers when I was still in high school. Over the last 2 years, I was disappointed to see this blog reduced into one press release after another, and there didn’t seem to be transparency in which one was paid and which one was genuine.  It also seemed this blog only generated a lot of comments when people were bitching and criticizing.
I hope you can go back to the “old you”. I don’t often agree with your opinions, but at least they’re honest and I’d rather have that than those fake “sweetness and light” blogs.

    Dear Cecile,

Your blog has been informative, educational, entertaining, uplifting, inspiring, and at times infuriating.  Because of what I’ve read in your posts, I have bought products, looked up links, explored stores/restaurants/shops/hotels, watched shows and movies, and participated in advocacies.  You have also helped me develop my sense of style in fashion and design, as well as my taste and interest in movies, TV, literature, cuisine, and culture at large.  And I know that there are many readers like me out there.  It shows how effective and influential you are as a blogger.  As blogging doesn’t seem to be your main source of income but rather a creative outlet, I hope you rediscover the fulfillment of writing about you want to write about – no more, no less.
Thank you for doing what you’ve been doing.  During a class on blogging, the speaker asked this question:  what would the world be missing without you in it?   I hope that during this period of rest and reflection, you will find your answers and happily return to your established niche in the blogging world.

Oh, one last thing: this is unsolicited advice but here goes: I hope that as you strive for your ideal weight, may you also develop a healthy, balanced self-image that is not dependent on what you see on your scale or measuring tape, or even what you see in the mirror.  I wish you good health and peace of mind.

I’ve been reading your blog for the last five years and my daily routine includes checking to see if you have any new entries. While I am and will always be a fan, I have to be honest with you that for some time I have been missing the ‘old’ Chuvaness — the one who’d write no-holds barred posts on celebrities, the latest gossip and all forms of random guilty pleasures. You have no idea how many times you made me and my friends cackle like crazy while reading your more ‘controversial’ (for lack of a better word) pieces, and for that I really have to thank you, Miss C.

However, when the ads started appearing, I sensed a restraint in your writing, and my best guess was that you were careful not to express anything that your advertisers might deem combative or offensive. And as one of the fine folks in the comments section pointed out, some of your posts were becoming commercial.

I’ll miss my Chuvaness blog fix during your hiatus, but I also understand that this is a much-needed break for you and I wish you well. I’m already looking forward to your first post in 2013!

i’ve been a loyal reader for several years na.  reading this post actually didn’t surprise me much as i’d been feeling for some time already that you haven’t been blogging like yourself compared to before… i wasn’t seeing the fun posts you used to do like the “famas gowns equations” of pinay celebrities (do you remember that?) or your wacky commentaries on the buzz episodes.  i didn’t always agree with your opinions or some of your catty statements (hehe) but i appreciated your candor, wit, humor, and the honesty with which you wrote about personal issues like religion, fears about the end of the world, even your insecurities about your weight… anyway, i do hope to see you back online soon and will eagerly await your return from your hiatus.  everyone does deserve a break.  good luck with your new year resolutions.

    Hello Ms. C.

I don’t usually post comments on your blog but I’m an avid reader and check your blog at least once a day. Few years back, I discovered your Livejournal blog through Ms. Daphne Paez’s old blog and I’ve been reading your blog (from the old to this new one) ever since. I remember that it took me two weeks to read your previous blog entries (but I had to stop pre-2007) because I like the way you wrote your blog; it’s like talking to a friend telling how her day went or just expressing her self. In short, it’s a genuine personal blog; good or bad your wrote about it.

I was able to understand your anger towards a flamboyant boy (never fully grasp the issue since I didn’t follow it); your “WQ” comments on “It” bags are hilarious and your mood for the day are amusing too. Your blog also became a guide for me for hotels, restaurants and furniture designs. Please don’t be offended when I say that I was amused by your “twitter war” with a certain bag blogger or your dislike for a certain former first daughter who is now a first sister. I was happy for you when you finally able to bring Christian home and admired you after the devastation of Ondoy because of what you’ve done. What I’m trying to say is that your blog inspired, amused, entertained and informed me, and I thank you for that.

On the flip side, I personally felt that shortly after you transferred to this site your entries became more and more impersonal and commercialized. I hope that this 2013 you get your mojo back and I’m one of your countless readers waiting for your next entry. Happy New Year to you and your family. God Bless!

Oh wow, I think I understand you. My blogs’ earnings are picking up na, which is great, but sometimes blogging now feels like WORK! Well, work nga syempre, may bayad na kasi. I am happy, of course, I guess because I left my job to be a full-time mom, but parang I feel I need to control it now before the blogs control me.

I also want to simplify in 2013. I want to be a housewife! Nagsawa ako sa glamour ng magazine life. I’ll always be grateful for that chapter pero siguro dahil nanay na ako, gusto ko sa bahay na lang =D

I’m curious to see which sponsors make the cut =) But I’m excited to know you’re choosing content carefully. That means more Chuvaness and less commercials ;P Meanwhile, yung mga sponsors na ayaw mo, paki-refer na lang sa Topaz Horizon at sa Topaz Mommy =D

It happens to the best of bloggers. I attended a talk once by one of the Netherlands’ biggest lifestyle bloggers who said that she basically wants to give up blogging every two months (but hasn’t). One time she seriously considered giving up blogging was when a photo of her baby from her blog got over 200,000 repins on Pinterest. I can’t even imagine.

I think it’s admirable that you want to choose your partners (blog-wise) and pour your energy into things that matter to you. You give so much to your readers and it’s only fair that you get what you truly want out of blogging in return.

Enjoy your blog vacation, and I hope you get your mojo back!

I can hear some sighs of relief from NAIA, but I hope you don’t give up on your cause.

I guess I’ll just ask some chismis from Fumi. I’ve been a loyal Fumi customer even before he opened Natural Hype(R) and he often shares fun stories about you and your parties.

We talk about a lot of things, but there’s one thing we always agree on: you brought style to Metro Manila and it’s such a better place to live in because of you.

We all go through a phase Ms. C, losing mojo is but a phase. Been through hundreds of situations like that. Don’t be disheartened. But I agree with you on choosing sponsors wisely, I guess it makes or breaks us who we end up with. Take a break, you’ve done phenomenal these past few years and you’ve done SO MUCH to entertain readers like me (in some odd way I feel I am not worthy kekeke). You deserve all the rest and time spent with family. You can get that because you are your own boss =) I can still remember the time when I first met you, I was a fanboy just like any other blogger… but you’ve given me more through your site and when we touch base, make me feel friendship, make us all loved.. ayoko na mag kwento ng mushy haha (stop na here “touching lives part” LOL)..

Just take your time Ms. C, your kids (including your hubby) deserve more of your time than writing here; so just come back if you feel this isn’t work anymore. =) Happy New Year, Happy Holidays to you and your family..

Awww I wish you get your mojo back Ms. C! Love your blog posts. They inspire me and your readers I believe. Maybe just take a break from blogging and anything else. Maybe you can go back to it … we’ll wait. :) Things that matter most to you, yes, we’d love to read that. :)

Have a blessed and safe 2013 ahead Ms. C! God bless!

Oh Ms. C! This is selfish of me to say, but it is just too heartbreaking! Checking your blog has not only been part of my daily routine, but you have helped me learn to open my mind more about the world! I do respect your decision, though, and I pray you get your mojo back real soon.
Wishing you the best for 2013, A.
