Hi Cecile,
My name is Mimi. I am Paco Larrañaga’s sister. Thank you so much for supporting “Give Up Tomorrow”.
I appreciate it more than you know.
We have been fighting this battle for justice for Paco for so long. Now with the documentary showing the truth of what happened 15 years ago, I hope that many more will join us fight for Paco, his co-accused and all the other innocents wrongfully convicted out there.
Right now Paco is still in prison in Spain. He is not out on parole. Since he has served 15 years of his sentence, he has been allowed on furloughs and leave, BUT he has to go back to jail after.
A few months ago, I went to see him when he was granted leave. It was one of the happiest moments of my life. It was heartbreaking to have to bring him back to prison, but we don’t take these mercies and miracles for granted.
Every night, while Paco sleeps in prison, I pray that one day soon he will be able to walk out of the prison for good—a free and vindicated man.

After doing the rounds of film festivals abroad and sponsored/private screenings in Metro Manila and Cebu, Give Up Tomorrow will be finally shown for a limited time in selected theaters.

One of the most riveting and relevant documentary features of our time—Give Up Tomorrow—by filmmakers Mike Collins and Marty Syjuco—has been screened in over 50 film festivals in more than 25 countries. It has won 15 major awards including 7 Audience Awards, 4 Human Rights Awards, and the Activism Award at Michael Moore’s Traverse City Film Festival.
Give Up Tomorrow brings to light the circus that is the Philippine justice system, with corrupt officials, bad cops, and a hysterical media playing to an angry public out for vengeance.
But underneath it all is an intimate drama focused on the struggle of two angry, sorrowful mothers who have dedicated more than a decade to execute or save one innocent man.

    Like I said, the defense team wasn’t able to effectively demolish the prosecution’s evidences. The decision was reviewed by the supreme court. I never said he was guilty or not, merely stating one of the basis why it was difficult to acquit.

    Not one of the 31 cinemas in Cebu would show this film apparently because even after 15 years this case is still considered controversial.  There was a special showing at the Marcelo Fernan Press Center in Cebu City the other night, but the audience was limited.  Sayang.  Sana ma-pressure the Ayala Malls to show it in Cebu even for a limited run.

    I have seen the place where they dumped the body of their victim…….you can just imagine if you were the one who was thrown in that ravine….evil people lurks and hides behind beautiful faces….This is karma and he paid for it.

    The Supreme Court has decided this case on the entirety of the evidences presented and not just on one witness whose testimony may be doubtful. Paco’s team wasn’t able to effectively demolish the credibility of the prosecution witnesses. Below is an excerpt, of the decision copied from the link above.

    “At this juncture, it bears mentioning that this case
    is not the first time that Larrañaga was charged with or complained of
    pruriently assaulting young female students in Cebu. Months before the
    abduction of Marijoy and Jackie, the parents of a certain Rochelle
    Virtucio, complained about Larrañaga’s attempt to snatch their young
    daughter and drag her in a black, stylish Honda Civic. It happened just
    near the gate of Rochelle’s school, thus, showing his impudence. We quote a portion of the transcript of stenographic notes dated September 23, 1998, thus:

    “ATTY. HERMOSISIMA:

    Your Honor please, this is a …. Inspector Era handed to this representation a copy of a
    Letter dated September 25, 1996, addressed to the Student Affairs
    Office, University of San Carlos,P. del Rosario Street, Cebu City, and this is signed by Leo Abayan and Alexander Virtucio and noted by Mrs. Aurora Pacho, Principal, University of San Carlos, Girls High School, and for the record, I will read the content:

    TO WHOM THIS MAY CONCERN:

    We the parents and guardians of Rochelle Virtucio, a first year
    high school student of your University of San Carlos-Girls High School,
    are writing your good office about an untoward incident involving our
    daughter and another student of your school.

    x x x x x x

    That last Monday at around 5:00 PM, Rochelle and
    other classmates, Michelle Amadar and Keizaneth Mondejar, while on
    their way to get a ride home near the school campus, a black Honda
    Civic with five young male teenagers including the driver, suddenly
    stopped beside them, and simultaneously one of them, which was later
    identified as FRANCISCO JUAN LARRANAGA, a BSHRM I student of your
    school, grabbed Rochelle by her hand to try to get Rochelle to their
    vehicle. She resisted and got away from him. Sensing some people were
    watching what they were doing, they hurriedly sped away.

    We are very concerned about Rochelle’s safety. Still now, she is
    suffering the shock and tension that she is not supposed to experience
    in her young life. It is very hard for us parents to think about what
    she’d been through.”16

    The presence of such complaint in the record of this
    case certainly does not enhance Larrañaga’s chance of securing an
    acquittal.”

    I don’t know much about this and I don’t intend to know more… I assume it didn’t go well for Paco and his family… from what happened to my sister, the judge ruled that the penalty be lessen and the “incident” be  adjusted to a very minor case of theft for the accused are minors… and that’s how we do justice here

    My sister was one of the victims that were robbed as the jeep was cruising Coastal Road. 2 of them continued to pursue the case. It came to the point that the mothers (note the “s”) and the pregnant “wife” of the accused went to our home begging that we withdraw the case filed and not to attend the hearings. I applaud my (younger) sister for being brave. In the end it “looked” like the Judge just slapped the hands of the mother of the accused for not taking care of their sons and warned that the next time this incident happens they’ll be put to jail together with their sons. The other victim withdrew her case a day before the judge made the ruling.
